Self Evaluation

This wasn't one of my favorite essay since I wasn't completly into my topic. I found it so much easier to play Devils advocate than it was to actually argue for it. I was really difficult trying to organize it and use the right words so that my essay does not seem week. Overall it was really interesting and was very helpful. The assignments weren't as helpful as i thougt it would be but were useful. My strengths were playing devils advocate. My weakness was trying to stay true to my arguement and making sure that everything was organized.

ENC 1101 is my favorite class by far. The people and everyone are so nice even though tasha baby gave us a really harsh first impression. She turned out to be one of the most helpful teachers i've had in my whole life. I love the analysis essay. and i love the fact that its not a lecture class. It made it interesting and i felt that we got a lot accomplished. The overall atmosphere between the tasha and the students is great. I love it! Although i must say I strongly disliked turnitin.com... The peer reviews there were horrible. Although the person that i had was very helpful i realized today that she didn't get her paper peer reviewed at all! Plus the deadlines were confusing since it had two dates after the start date. The peer reviews are better when they are done in class since its easier to give verbal feedback that could not be given on turn it in.com. It was very difficult to give suggestions.

Devils Advocate

My topic is about giving teens contraceptives in school! I personally do not think it is okay for the schools to give teen contraceptives for several reasons. It could be assumed that the schools are trying to promote sexual activity amoungst its students.

Students at this age do not have the mentality to know right from wrong. Therefore, no matter if the school preaches abstinance and shows the consequences of having unprotected sex. Sexual education shows them that unwanted preganacies can occur as wells as sexualy transmitted disease but at this age, teens just want the excitement. By having the school giving them contraceptives the schools are just promoting "safe" sex. They are trying to lower the amount of unwanted pregnancies and raise awareness on sexually transmitted diseases. Even if not all the teens pay attention to what the school has to say, they might be able to change one life. These kids are having sex regardless of what the school says so why not have them do it the right way! Atleast by having the schools giving them the contraceptives, the schools are giving them access to things that they are too embarrased to get out in normal stores. It is difficult for a "child" to get contraceptives in stores. They might think that its humiliating or that people are judging them. This makes it easier for them to get it.

Hip Hop Gansters or Preachers

Although I do not know much about the "big controversy with Don Imus who made racist coments about the Womans Rutgers Basketball Team." It was kind of difficult to write about that particular topic without having any prior knowledge.

To start things off, I personally think that there are two different types of hip hop genres. There is one that just speak their mind and try and be good people who try and preach life to others through rap songs. Then you have others who rap about useless crap like hoes, pimps and getting laid and about the "ghetto side of life". In the first video, Russell Simmons and Common (my favorite rapper) are two of the most well known and influencial rappers of their time. These are two examples of people who base their music on their personal experience and about whats important. Common writes about peace and love around the word. They care about people other than themselves. It frustrates me to think that people like Common could be in the same genre as 50 cent. Songs like "Ayo Technology" could never compare to songs by Common. Their words are completly different. 50 Cent talks about his personal problems and how he was brought up in the ghetto. but its hard to pay attention to the lyrics with all the volgarity that hes yelling. Although the interview with 50 cent was interesting and entertaining. its hard for me to get past the lack of knowledge that he pocesses. But he does make the point that life is difficult and that was what he was raised on so thats what he writes about. People these days are used to hearing "bad words" so rappers are free to speak their mind in which ever way they chose.

When people stoop down to use "bad words", to me it just shows a lack of vocabulary.... there are so many ways to say things without usig the N word

MY HERO

Your typical fourth grader would not know what “cancer” is; yet I was in fourth grade when I first realized the wrath of this deadly disease. The constant vomiting from the chemotherapy and the loosing of the hair was definitely not an enjoyable sight for those in my family. Coming home to my mother’s tears was one of the hardest things that I have ever had to face. She being such a strong non-emotional woman; I knew that at that point I knew there was something wrong. From that day forward, I knew my life would never be the same.

My grandmother was actually the one who was diagnosed with cancer. She was diagnosed with leukemia when I was about 12 years old. I would constantly visit her to see how she was doing and to make sure that she felt comfortable and at ease with the chemotherapy situation. My mother and my aunts were constantly switching shifts to make sure that she never felt alone. They had to see her in her worse times. The times when death felt like it was creeping through the door. Nevertheless, my grandma was a trooper and held on through leukemia until she got better. A couple years later, she was diagnosed with cancer once again. This time she had ovarian cancer. Yet her faith lived on so that she can see several more years until she was diagnosed with the final cancer. My grandmother went through so much and never wanted us to see her pain. She had a smile on her face even when she could bare the pain. Her story has encouraged me to live each day as if it were my last. Seeing her and many other children with cancer has allowed me to discover were I belong in life. Their stories have encouraged me to pursue a life of child oncology so that I can help as many diagnosed children as I can.

While little kids have those superficial heroes which they see and mimick from the television such as Spider Man or Superman I have my grandmother; although she is no longer with us, her memory is here for a lifetime. There are many things that are important in life. You have your car, your credit cards, your phone.... but non of those things are as important as the love you have from your family. Saturday was suppose to be my grandmother's 65 birthday, she passed away last year from cancer. She was one of the main reasons why I decided to go into the medical field. I made her a promise right before she died that i would do everything i could to try and stop others from going through what she went through and with tears in her eyes she told me she always thought i could do it and not to let anybody stop me. Its hard to believe how much impact on person could have in your life. She was so young but went through so much. She is my hero. She fought through leukemia, ovarian cancer, and then the final cancer. She was a woman of her faith. Its hard to believe that it was a year ago that i last had a hug from her. Its hard to let go of that fact that shes gone. But one thing is for sure. ... Her strength and determination will live on forever through me.

Happy Birthday Abuelita. I love you.
p.s. this may not make much sense. but its random thoughts from the heart.

World Hunger

How many meals do you eat a day? Have you ever gone a day without eating? How about a week? Did you know that more than 800 million people all over the world know what it means to go to bed hungry every night? Sadly, about 24,000 people die from the effects of hunger each day. That's about one person every 3.5 seconds. They are not hungry because they haven't eaten today. Many of these families do not eat for weeks due to their lack of money to provide their family with food. Most poor people who battle hunger deal with chronic undernourishment and vitamin or mineral deficiencies, which result in stunted growth, weakness and heightened susceptibility to illness. More than 1.2 billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less than $1 per day. Undernourishment negatively affects people's health, productivity, sense of hope and overall well-being. A lack of food can stunt growth, slow thinking, sap energy, hinder fetal development and contribute to mental retardation.153 million children under 5 in the developing world are underweight. Worse yet, 11 million children younger than 5 die every year, more than half from hunger-related causes.

Those are all random facts taken from different websites but the truth is that there are millions of people dying from starvation. Lack of food causes a breakdown of the body leading to many things such as mental retardation, immunodifficiency and other illness. Do not take any meal for granted for you never know if that one will be your last.

Carlos Mencia!

I absolutly love this man. I think he is so funny! He speaks the truth. It is soOooO true what he said. Almost every word is the truth. ADD and ADHD are all stupid excuses that parents made for their children. If you go to any other country you are almost guaranteed a better education than here. All that FCAT crap only sets us behind especially in college. You don't use that anywhere! ... i love that he speaks his mind. He equally offends everyone. He doesn't only pick on one race. he messes with everyone.

Its true though, parents these days are constantly making excuses for their children. They don't let them stand for themselves. Especially when it comes to school. The standards have been lowering dramatically to satisfy "stupid america". We're lucky we know how to add and substract. The majority of america needs their fingers to count and give up when they run out of fingers. High School was such a breeze since the teachers taught at such a "DUH DUH DUH" pace.

In part one he makes fun of other races and makes it noticable how people laugh at jokes pertaining to other but when it comes to laughing about their own race they don't laugh instead they get mad. I agree with 80% of the things that he says. I love carlos mencia... its about time that someone says what we've all been thinking!

Don't Want to Be An American Idiot!!

"Don't want to be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new mania
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind **** America."

After watching the Miss Teen video, the song by Green Day "American Idiot" started making alot more sense to me. I finally realized what they ment and what their lyrics are all about. The lyrics are pretty much saying that our way of thought and the way we live now is all because of the media.

With their subliminal messages they have controled the world. Think about it.. we live in a world were Paris Hilton and Britney Spears are more important than politics. Ask anyone what happened to Paris recently and everyone will be able to tell you but im sure no one will be able to name atleast 4 people running for president in 2008.

We look up to being like Paris Hilton when in fact she has no college degree and barely even knows what a calculator looks like, let alone use it. The media has a huge influence in the way that we think and the things that we do.

Why is coach better? why do we like coke? Because of the media. The media tells us wats in and whats out. Without it we'd probrably be mindless zombies (more than we are already) because we'd have no one thinking for us. Its so much easier for others to tell you what you should wear and to eat than to actually think of it yourself.

How much does the media influence us? Alot ... Do you really think you would have the car that you do if it wasn't advertised in the middle of your favorite show. most likely not. I would be lying if I said that I was not affected by the media because I am. Im another american idiot who knows more about Teen gossip than the war in Iraq and the important things. We constantly have different bilboards and commercials and magazine adds giving us subliminal messages encouraging us to buy their product. We usually buy into it too!

Miss Teen Ditz

Wow, excuses excuses. During that whole video she sounds like shes reading from a cue card... (that is if she can read). "Blondes Are Ditz." I used to think that was just a stereotype but shes not a very good example. I personally don't think she knows were she is or where L.A. is .... im suprised she even knew what graphic design was. I'd expect her to be ditzy model who lives with her mom since she doesn't know how to do anything else. She has no excuses. If she didn't understand that question she should have said something, she would have looked less stupid saying "I don't understand the question can you repeat it again". Than the stupidy that she blurted. She tried to make a comeback at the VMAs and that was also a bust since she again sound like she was reading a cue card. This just shows that beauty pagents are for those who can't think. All they are suppose to be is a visual figure of goodness when all they care about is looking pretty. Its sad how people look up to pagent winners. All people go on talk shows to make themselves seem like a victim after they have a mess up especially like that one. now lets wait for britney's excuse for why she messed up at the VMA. that was another train wreck!

One of My Favorite Dances

My First Blog.

I really can't say that this is my first blog because it isn't. I use to have a live journal called Xanga which I think is 10 times easier than blogger.com but thats besides the point. Im still not used to the whole technology thing with our english class. Everything we need is on webCT or on blogger. Its still weird to me. Im used to going to class and having the teacher explain everything in person not online. The thing that makes it even worse is that i can't even read my emails since the java thing doesn't work. This is all too much. Hopefully i'll get used to all of this sometime soon. Im not a big fan of this blogger.
